Selling a junk car without a title
You can often sell a junk car without the title, but it depends on your state and the car's age. Some states don't title older vehicles at all (Alabama, for one, exempts vehicles more than 35 model years old). Everywhere else, the fix is a duplicate title from the DMV, which usually takes a short form and a fee.

Title and paperwork questions
Can I sell a junk car without a title?
Often, yes. A few states don't title older cars at all: Alabama, for example, doesn't require one for a vehicle more than 35 model years old. Depending on the state, our buyer partner may be able to buy a car without a title. If your state requires a title, you can request a duplicate from the DMV, which usually takes a short form and a small fee. Either way, you need some proof the car is yours, and no legitimate buyer will take it without that. Find your state below.
What paperwork do I need to sell a junk car?
Usually the title in your name and a photo ID. Some states also ask for a bill of sale, a lien release if the car was financed, or a notarized signature (Ohio requires one). After the sale, file your state's notice of sale or release of liability (California's is due within 5 calendar days) and remove the plates if your state keeps them with the owner. The pre-pickup checklist covers the rest.
What if there's still a loan on the car?
You can still sell it. The lender has to release the lien, either by you paying it off or by the payoff coming out of the sale. In California, for example, the lienholder releases its interest on the title itself or on a separate lien release form (CA DMV). Tell our buyer partner about the loan when they contact you so it's part of the paperwork from the start.
The title isn't in my name. Can I still sell?
Only the person on the title, or someone with legal authority such as an executor or a power of attorney, can sell the car. If you inherited it, the estate paperwork usually covers it. Ask us and we'll tell you what your state needs.
