How selling your junk car works

You send a request with the car's year, make, model and ZIP code. We pass it to our buyer partner, which contacts you with an offer. If you accept, its tow truck picks the car up for free and the driver pays you by check or cash before it leaves.

How it works

Three steps from request to cash

  1. Get your offer

Fill in the form with the year, make, model and ZIP code. We send it to our buyer partner, which contacts you with an offer.

  2. Pick a pickup time

If you accept, you pick a pickup time. The tow truck comes wherever the car is parked, for free.

  3. Get paid at pickup

The driver pays the agreed amount at pickup, by check or cash, once you sign the title over.

What should I do before pickup?

  • Remove personal items. Check under the seats, the glove box, the trunk and the spare tire well.
  • Take off toll tags and parking permits.
  • Remove the license plates if your state keeps them with the owner.
  • Find the title and your photo ID. If there's a lien, have the release letter.
  • Make sure a tow truck can reach the car, or mention gates, tight driveways or flat tires when you accept the offer.

What does the driver check?

Expect the driver to confirm the car matches the description the offer was based on:

  • The car is the year, make and model you described
  • It starts, or it doesn't, the way you said
  • The engine, transmission, catalytic converter and wheels are there, or you said what's missing
  • The name on the title matches your photo ID

Before you accept, ask the buyer to confirm the offer won't change at pickup if the car matches your description. If something is different, ask what changes before you sign, and you can still say no.

What do I do after the sale?

  • File your state's notice of sale or release of liability, if it has one.
  • Cancel the insurance and any registration renewals.
  • Keep a copy or photo of the signed title and the receipt or bill of sale.

Deadlines differ. California, for example, says you must notify the DMV "within 5 calendar days" of the sale (California DMV).

FAQ

Pickup and towing questions

How fast can my car be picked up?

Our buyer partner gives you the pickup time when they schedule the tow. Same-day pickup is possible in some cases. Otherwise the timing depends on where the car is and the tow schedule.

Do I need to be there at pickup?

Someone has to hand over the signed title and receive the payment, so usually yes. If that's hard, ask the buyer about other arrangements when they schedule the pickup.

What should I do before the tow truck comes?

Remove personal items and toll tags, take off the license plates if your state keeps them with the owner, and have the title and your ID ready. Cancel insurance only after the car has been picked up.
