Where our state title rules come from

Each rule in our state title guides was copied from the state's own motor vehicle agency or state law, and kept only if the sentence below appeared on that page when it was checked. A script compared each quote with the live page. Where a site blocks automated checks, we read the page in a browser instead, and say so. Rules we couldn't check aren't shown in a guide's “What does this state ask of sellers?” panel. The six states that don't require a title for older cars have that rule checked the same way, with its quote below. Fees were kept only if the exact dollar amount appeared on the linked page, or on the agency fee page shown with it. The same rules are available as JSON.

50 of 51 states have checked rules. Last checked . If you spot a rule that has changed, call us and we'll update it.
